mailexpire is a free service, and I always hope to keep mailexpire in its current form free. But it's not cheap to run, and I've tried a few things to try to contribute to the cost - sponsorships, affiliate schemes, spin-off development work and downright begging so far. The latest attempt is to start a cafepress shop to sell mailexpire apparel.

I've put a few basic items in there just to get the ball rolling. I will be adding more as time and inspiration permit. If you'd like to help, feel free to buy something, or send me on any designs which might sell better than what I've got up there at the moment.

Why does mailexpire require confirmation of each alias?

There are many online reviews of and and discussions about the mailexpire service. One point which is frequently raised as a point against the service is that we won't activate an alias without confirming that the recipient wants it. Before an alias becomes active, a confirmation mail containing an activation link is sent to the email address.

A common view is that this is an unnecessary extra step. When you want an alias, you want it now. So why introduce this process? In fact, didn't mailexpire originally launch way back when without this step?

Yes, There are two good reasons for this.

Firstly, we don't want just anyone to be able to set up an alias for your email address. It's your inbox, we want your approval before forwarding mail to you.

Secondly, not having the approval runs the risk of mailexpire becoming part of the problem. Without the confirmation step, a spammer could potentially create an alias for each email address on their list and then send their snake oil to the aliases instead of to the actual email addresses. Routing them through mailexpire instead of sending directly from their own mail server would give the spammer something to hide behind. That's a facility we don't intend to offer to spammers.

While alias activation may be an extra step, we believe it's worth it for the extra protection it offers to you.

What is mailexpire?

For those of you who don't know, mailexpire is a free anti-spam service, operating at www.mailexpire.com.

If you need to fill in a registration form, but would rather not give away your real email address, generate a free mailexpire alias and give them that instead. Any mail sent to your alias will be forwarded to your normal inbox, so you don't have to run around your junk hotmail or gmail accounts to find it. But, when you decide you don't want any more mail from the source, you can kill off the alias and you'll never hear from them again.

You can always see which alias was used to send you mail, so if you start getting spam, you can tell where it came from. You can identify the spammers.

A number of you have been asking for this for a while, and I've been meaning to get around to it for a while, but here it is, the mailexpire blog is finally launched.

I wanted to take the time to set up my own blog software on my own server, but that's still nowhere near happening, so here we go. Forgive the bland look. I just decided that if I spent time on the aesthetics, it would just be another excuse not to get this off the ground.
